Can I Cure My Diabetes By Becoming A Vegetarian?

Some people who have moved over to a vegetarian diet are convinced that it has been responsible for curing their diabetes but can this really be the case or is there something else at work here?

Diet is a very important factor when it comes to diabetes but here we are normally talking principally about controlling the level of sugar in the bloodstream and so we are looking at changes to our dietary habits which control our intake of sugar. So can a vegetarian diet help in this respect?

Vegetarians fall into three categories - vegans, lacto-vegetarians and lacto-ovo vegetarians. Vegans eat no animal products, including products derived from animals such as eggs and milk, and their diet is confined solely to plant-based foods. Lacto-vegetarians add milk and some milk based products to an otherwise plant-based diet, but exclude eggs. Finally, lacto-ovo-vegetarians add milk, milk based products such as cheese and yogurt and eggs to a plant-based diet.

In all of these cases, because the diet is essentially centered on fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds and possibly some dairy products, it is essentially a low cholesterol, low fat, high fiber diet and tends, by its very nature, to reduce sugar intake and so assist with the control of diabetes.

However, in many people who convert to a vegetarian diet there is something else hard at work in combating diabetes.

The substantial rise in diabetes, especially in the West, is due in no small measure to the fact that we are gaining weight at an alarming rate and that obesity has now reached epidemic proportions in many countries, with the United States leading the field. Weight gain is a major risk factor for diabetes and many people are developing the disease for no other reason than the fact that they are gaining weight.

The solution of course, in the first instance and before the problem gets out of hand, is simply to go on a diet, start taking some exercise and lose weight and what could be better for accomplishing this than a low cholesterol, low fat, low sugar, high fiber vegetarian diet.

So, returning to our original question - can you cure your diabetes by becoming a vegetarian? - the simple answer is yes but it is not the diet itself which will cure your diabetes, but the fact that it can both help you to control your sugar intake and lose weight which is doing the trick. To this end it is a change in diet which is the answer and, while this could be to a vegetarian diet, this does not have to be the case.

A Sanitation System Checklist - Consult Before Buying Somebody Else's Problem

Given that nearly half of all the homes in America are on septic systems, anyone buying a home outside major metropolitan areas has a one in two chance of ending up with a septic system. Few states require inspection of sanitation systems before allowing homeowners to sell. The assumption is that you, the potential buyer, will do your own inspection. The same would be true when buying commercial buildings. Here is a walk-through list of what to ask and what to do.

First
What type of sanitation is in place?
If the property has city hookup, what is the monthly fee?
If the property is new but permitted for city hookup, what will be the cost?

With city sewer hookup you need go no further with this checklist.

Second
What sanitation system is in place?
When was it first used?
What records are available showing problems, repairs and any alterations?

Without a trustworthy maintenance record you are about to buy a pig in a poke.

Third If the sanitation system is a septic system, ask these questions:

When was it installed?
Have there been any problems?
Where is the maintenance documentation?
What is the cost of operating the system?
How often does it need routine monitoring and servicing?
How long is the system expected to last?

Fourth Ask to inspect the leech field.

The leech field is the area where perforated lines have been laid below the ground surface. Treated waste is dispersed through these lines and discharges into the ground. Look for pools of water and areas of mud on the surface of this area. These would be indicators that the treated waste matter is not percolating into the ground properly: a red flag.

Look for ruts and tire tracks. Driving a vehicle, tractor or heavy machinery over a leechfield can crack or compress the leech lines: a red flag.

Check for the access manhole cover where the septic system would be pumped. Also check for how the system's tanks or treatment chambers are accessed. In both cases be sure the access is secured against a small child accidentally falling or climbing into the system. Any access covers should be out of the traffic pattern of vehicles and machinery so as to ensure that the cover will not be accidentally be damaged or loosened. This is important in places where snow could cover them to the point that a driver would not know they are there.

Fifth If the property does not have city hookup or a septic system ask these questions about the alternative system:

What is the system?
When was it installed?
How long is it expected to last?
How does it work?
What does it cost to operate?
What are you supposed to do to keep the system operating well?
What problems have there been and when did the problems occur?
What was the solultion and how much did it cost?
Where are the service and maintenance records?

Then: ask for a demonstration.

Remember: aside from the toilet, most of a home's sanitation system is hidden from view. That makes it easy to take for granted that everything is in working order. The tendency is to ignore what is not visible. Sanitation is one of the hidden foundations on which any civilization rests. At the current time in our history that foundation could be in considerably better condition than is the case!

Tile and Grout Repair Not "Rocket Science"

Homeowners today are constantly faced with maintenance and repair projects on their home. With an estimated 125,000,000 housing units in the USA, one can only imagine the number of hours, material and labor force required to maintain and protect the quality of these homes.

An ever increasing number of homeowners are discovering the advantages of learning simple and not-so-simple repairs around the house and the cost saving benefits of, doing it yourself.

Tile grout repair has been placed in the homeowners category of do not attempt for far too long and for those homeowners with willingness to learn and repair items around the house, its really not rocket science!

Although a complete tile or stone installation is best performed by a professional in the trade, homeowners can take on the ensuing maintenance and small repairs necessary for the longevity of their tile and grout.

Some of the most common grout problems homeowners face is around the sinks, tubs and showers. Where grout abuts differing materials like porcelain, sheetrock, metal or wood, this scenario introduces a set of factors that can affect the strength and foundation of the grout at those particular points. Expansion and contraction of the differing materials can cause cracking and chipping of the grout. The settling and movement of the house and foundation through the years can also cause cracking and splintering of grout joints as well as the tile itself.

A thorough investigation of the tiled surfaces in your home should include all the edges or ends of the tile and grout, all corners (where grout is likely to crack), tile and grout around windows, ledges and fixtures, and where tile grout meets various other building materials.

Repairing these cracks and chips can save you money in the long run, especially in the wet areas where water can seep through the damaged grout and rot the wood framing or underlayment. Home inspectors always look around the tub and shower for these water problems because its such a common problem, and when selling your house can be a very expensive repair.

If you can clean your grout, you can repair your grout! Its as simple as that. With the proper instructions, tools and products available today, homeowners no longer have to wait for a repairman or spend big bucks on a tile-man. They can now, Do-It-Themselves!

Appliances and Your Utility Bill

Your utility bill is a collection of sub-electrical uses from your lights to your heater. Your appliances fall within this category and can suck up amazing amounts of energy.

The power usage of an electrical appliance is of concern to most everyone due to the rising cost of electrical power. The kilowatt meter that is usually attached to the outside of your home measures the watts being used. When those little wheels are spinning wildly, you can anticipate a hefty electric bill in next months mail. When you understand a bit about power consumption, it is possible to reduce your power usage by a considerable amount.

The watt is the most common term associated with power usage. A watt is a measurement of actual work performed by electricity. The watt rating is usually listed on an electrical appliance. Some items use the watt as a descriptive term such as a 30 watt speaker system or a 100 watt light bulb. Other appliances might list amps and voltage, but a simple formula can convert this to watts. The formula is amps x volts = watts.

It is important to note that the watt rating of an appliance refers to its maximum capacity when operating. A 500 watt refrigerator will only use 500 watts when its compressor is running a full blast. Normally, it would be using more like 50 watts to power its electronics. The same would apply to a fan. Its watt rating would refer to its operation at full speed. A computers watt rating would vary depending on how many programs are running.

Some appliances will contain to use some power even when not in use. This would be the case of a clock on a television, for example. In most cases, the best way to conserve power is to reduce the use of an appliance. There are several tactics that can be used to conserve power. Anything that produces heat tends to use more power. Simple things like using cold water rather than hot in the washing machine can translate into a considerable savings.

A wise homeowner would treat electrical power usage in the same manner as a businessman would do it. There are certain things that are necessary, and there are certain things that are not as important. Conservation of electrical power usage not only is wise from a personal economic point of view, but it also is an important part of conservation. Much electrical power is generated by the burning of fossil fuels and growth is putting a serious strain on the supply. Every watt saved by every person can help with this problem. This saving not only will be felt in your wallet, but also in the very air you breathe.

Health and Medical Tourism in Bulgaria

In 2004, the number of incoming tourists who visited the Bulgarian spa centres increased by approximately 20 percent, compared to 2003. The well developed network of private cosmetic surgery and dental clinics offer services at prices several times lower than the lowest in the European Union, and this fact has attracted the attention of the large insurance companies that cover their clients' medical expenses. They are more willing than before to pay for trips to the east, where treatment is many times cheaper.

Plastic surgery not covered by medical insurance also attracts clients with prices that are up to five times lower. The good value of medical treatment is topped up with high-quality service: foreign patients in Bulgaria have a wide choice of doctors and clinics because in the mid-1990s many of the best physicians in the country, disappointed with their low state salaries, set up private surgeries and clinics.

Mineral water treatment

Mineral water treatment is particularly popular among foreign tourists, because Bulgaria boasts more than a thousand mineral springs scattered throughout the country. The water content in many of them is similar to those in world-renowned spas like Baden-Baden and Vichy.

Some present-day Bulgarian spas were built on the sites of ancient Roman thermae or Turkish baths. The best-known balneology and mud bath therapy centres are Pavel Banya, Hisar, Velingrad, Narechen, Vurshets, Kyustendil and Momin Prohod, near Kostenets. They specialise in the treatment of different ailments, depending on their water content.

Hisar, located among the impressive ruins of an ancient Roman fortress in the plain between the Balkan Mountains and Plovdiv, is recommended for renal and gastrointestinal illnesses. Sapareva Banya sprang up around the hottest water spring in Bulgaria. Narechen specialises in neural disorders, Pavel Banya in orthopaedic illnesses and traumas, and Sandanski in pulmonary diseases. Two large seaside resorts, Albena and Pomorie, offer mud bath treatment.

Most of these centres also offer special rehabilitation and toning programmes. The prices vary, depending on the treatment. For example, a 10-day anti-stress programme, including aromatherapy, massage, and Iye-phoresis, costs less than 100 Euros; a flve-day treatment of rheumatic pain is from 70 to 110 Euros. Accommodation is between 20 and 70 Euros a day, full board.

Slimming centres

Other popular destinations are the slimming centres. The most popular clinic for non-medicinal treatment of obesity is located in the Black Sea resort of Sts. Constantine and Helena. There, a mild form of medical starvation is practised under constant medical supervision, in combination with a daily allowance of one kilogramme of raw fruit, and healthy eating habits.

The stay in the sanatorium can vary from 10 to 20 days, and the package is between 500 and 2,000 Euros, depending on the length of the treatment. It includes accommodation in a four-star hotel, daily doctor's rounds, personal consultation with the centre's head physician, the development of an individual dieting and nutrition schedule for each patient upon leaving, and medical examinations.

Plastic surgery

Plastic surgery also attracts health tourists with its prices and services. The plastic and cosmetic surgery clinics which opened in the mid-1990s turned out to be too many, and the severe competition forced their owners to invest in modern equipment, good specialists, and a range of amenities for in-house patients. Besides, they had to keep their prices low.

Whereas in Germany a woman will pay from 6,000 to 10,000 Euros for a bosom boost, the most expensive clinics in Bulgaria perform the operation for 2,500 to 3,000 Euros. The ratio between other services is similar.

Face-lifting under full anaesthesia is hardly over 1,200 Euros, complete lips correction is not higher than 450 Euros, and liposuction costs 300 Euros.

Dental services

Another popular goal of health tourism in Bulgaria is dental services. The private dental surgeries in the bigger towns are numerous, and the prices, calculated in accordance with the Bulgarian standard of living, are incredibiy low, compared to prices in western Europe. Some surgeries have dual pricing for Bulgarians and foreigners; so, check in advance.

The prices in Sofia, Burgas, Varna and Plovdiv are relatively the same: from 10 to 15 Euros for an initial examination, from 15 to 20 Euros for cleaning of caries and a photo polymer filling, and from 20 to 30 Euros for the treatment of pulpitis.

What does the law in Bulgaria say?

Bulgarian legislation grants foreign citizens the right to treatment in all medical establishments in the country. In case of emergency, foreigners can get help in the nearest clinic.

The head of the respective medical establishment has to inform the patient's insurer immediately about the necessary treatment, except in emergencies.

Short-term foreign visitors to Bulgaria who do not insure themselves according to internal regulations have to pay for their medical treatment in accordance with the price list of the respective medical institution.

The clinic or other medical establishment must inform the patient of the relevant costs prior to the commencement of treatment.

Get the Most Out of Your FastPass

Long lines and restless guests in popular queues are a thing of the past at Walt Disney World. At least it is for those who choose to take advantage of Disneys free service: FastPass.

So what is it?

FastPass debuted in 1999 and was embraced as a brilliant innovation in theme park engineering. This computerized system allows visitors to avoid standing in line for the most popular attractions throughout the Walt Disney World Resort. Many guests did not understand the system at the time and some still do not. As a matter of fact, during the three and a half years I was a cast member at the Disney-MGM Studios, I would often overhear guests remark: Hey, thats not fair! Those people pay extra and get to cut ahead of us in line!

How does it work?

The FastPass attraction reservation system is very simple to use and best of allits free. Go to a participating show or ride, locate the FastPass machine and insert an admission ticket for each person in your party who wishes to enter the attraction. The FastPass machine reserves a return appointment for your party and prints a pass for each ticket with a one-hour window (for example, 10:20-11:20 a.m.). From here, you can feel free to explore the less crowded attractions in your selected park. During that one hour time frame, you can usually squeeze in two (maybe three) smaller attractions instead of waiting in that bloated line. Give yourself at least 15 minutes to be able to make it back in time for your designated FastPass time. When you arrive at the attraction, simply hand the cast member standing in front of the FastPass entrance your passes and youre in!

Wow, thats so cool! I think Ill get one for every ride!

Not so fast. In order for Disneys FastPass system to work properly, they had to implement restrictions on the amount of FastPasses a guest can hold during a given period of time. Each guest may hold one FastPass for one attraction every two hours or after the one hour window expires; whichever comes first. Why? If everyone were able to come in to the parks and get a FastPass for every attraction at once it wouldnt be very fast, would it?

Great, Im ready to go!

The most important factor in getting what you want out of your Disney World visit is time management. Now that you know the FastPass system inside and out, youll be able to get out there and experience more of what the Walt Disney World Resort has to offerfaster, of course!

Central Florida Vacation

Part 1 Walt Disney World

Disney films were a staple when I was growing up, and we went to Disneyland in California dozens of times; my greatest ambition in those days was to live at Snow White's castle! So to say that I am a Disney Fan is a bit of an understatement. When I moved to Florida from the West Coast, I took every opportunity to visit Walt Disney World in Orlando and never tire of the parks. The last four years I lived there, I even had a clerical job for one of the Disney companies, off property and though I wasnt employed in the Park itself, I was thrilled to be small part of the magic.

We moved back to the West Coast and its been nearly a decade since Ive had the chance to go back, so an upcoming anniversary seemed like the perfect excuse to make a trip. I planned, saved, and dreamed of the trip for months anxious for the day we departed surprising my husband who thought we were doing something else. When we arrived at SeaTac, he found out the destination was Orlando, and good naturedly went along for the ride! Since our last few vacations had been fishing trips, this was set to be a very different kind of trip.

After flying all night, we arrived in Orlando around 7:00 a.m. I had been dreaming of pecan waffles for months so we headed straight to The Waffle House, a fixture in the South; thus energized we headed to Walt Disney World to check in our hotel. Since it opened in 1990, I had always been particularly fond of Disneys Yacht & Beach Club resorts, and we finally were able to stay at the Beach Club! The New England beach theme is charming and relaxing. Since it was early December, the Christmas decorations were all in place and added a unique enchantment to the setting, including a gingerbread carousel.

The hotel was able to allow us early check-in, so we changed and walked to the International Gate at EPCOT, which is near the France pavilion. The morning was bright and warm, and it was blissful to just walk around the grounds soaking up the sun. We spent a couple of hours scoping out what was new since wed last been there, and enjoyed a couple rides before heading back to the hotel in mid-afternoon. Since wed been up all night, we slept for a short time, and were refreshed for a simple appetizer dinner at one of the bars amazing Shrimp cocktails.

The next day we spent most of the day at EPCOT again, taking the time to really explore and enjoy another glorious warm and sunny day. Though there are many familiar exhibits and rides, many have been updated and several new rides awaited our discovery, and everything met our expectations. Mission Space and Test Track were thrilling and exciting and the grounds were especially beautiful, as always!

Since it was our anniversary, we had a special celebration dinner at the Yatchsman Steakhouse, and I even had my first taste of Louis the XIII de Remy Martin cognac. Then we walked back to EPCOT for the nightly Illuminations Fireworks display and then spent the rest of the balmy evening relaxing in the hot tub and going for a swim, with a clear starry sky overhead.

On the 2nd day of our trip, we spent the morning wandering around at Downtown Disney, where we enjoyed lunch at Planet Hollywood, explored the new (to us!) Disney Quest then headed to Disney MGM Studios where we spent the afternoon enjoying the exhilarating Aerosmiths Rockin Roller Coaster, the Twilight Zones Tower of Terror, favorites like Star Tours, and others. A Christmas-themed parade capped off the afternoon, and we took the water launch back to our hotel where we walked around the grounds again. On the way out of the hotel early that morning, we happen to notice several turtles resting in the sun in one of the ponds on the property, and spent a long time watching them before we started the busy day.

The next day we spent the morning at Magic Kingdom, enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, and Mickeys Philharmagic, a hilarious 3D movie staring Mickey Mouse and the irrepressible Donald Duck! We then headed to Disneys Grand Floridian Resort & Spa where we were booked for a spa treatment. We then enjoyed dinner at Narcoosees, nestled right on the shores of Seven Seas Lagoon with a perfect view of the Magic Kingdoms nightly fireworks displays. The Christmas decorations at the Victorian-themed Grand Floridian are meticulous and charming including a life-sized gingerbread house, and even toasty hot roasted chestnuts!

Though this was to be the last of our 4 days at the Walt Disney World Resort, more adventures awaited, as I had also booked a 3 night Disney Cruise to the Bahamas. We spent most of our time at Walt Disney World peacefully enjoying the familiar and exploring the new, and even though we never made it to some of the newer attractions like Animal Kingdom, the Sports Complex, or any of the water parks, we felt like we had done so much, relaxed, and truly enjoyed each day to the fullest!

Why Switch To A Tankless Water Heater?

Whether you are looking for an energy efficient water heating solution for a new house, or looking at repairing or replacing an old hot water storage tank, this is an ideal time to review your options.

Before you rush into fixing your old unit or buying a new hot water storage tank, take a minute to consider switching to a tankless water heater. There are many reasons why tankless water heaters are a sensible solution.

Save on Energy Costs

With rising gas and electricity costs, who wants to heat up a whole tank of water and have it sitting all day, continually cooling and requiring reheating?

A tankless water heater provides heated water on demand. In other words, it heats the water only as and when you need it. Tankless water heaters avoid the energy losses associated with storage tanks that keep hot water on standby. This is because tankless water heaters only use electricity or gas when the hot water is flowing or the tap is turned on.

Using a tankless water heater will typically result in saving 20 - 70% off your energy bill.

Hot Water That Never Runs Out

With tankless water heaters you won't run out of hot water any more, like you do with water storage tanks where you need to wait while the whole tank reheats. Whenever you need more hot water, you have it, instantly!

Environmentally Friendly

More and more people are realizing the importance of caring for our environment. Careless wasting of resources and energy is destroying our planet. Its a waste of energy to heat all the water in a storage tank if you probably wont use most of it.

Rebates & Tax Credits

Some governments and utility companies are now providing incentives to people to change to environmentally-friendly water heating systems.

Some major metro area utility companies are offering rebates for installation of a tankless water heater. You will need to check with your utility company.

And some governments will provide you with an Energy Tax Credit.

So if you are looking for a water solution thats really hot, go tankless.

David Goldsmith is a freelance journalist who would like to see the planet last a little while longer and help you to save on your energy bills. For more information on tankless water heaters, visit http://www.Tankless-Waterheating.com

How to Build a Pond or Water Garden With a Pond Liner

Using a pond liner is probably the easiest way to build a water garden or fish pond. The liner option allows you to build a pond that will adapt to any shape or size that you decide to make. There are two main types Butyl Rubber and PVC. Butyl Rubber will last the longest (30 years or more) as its less likely to get damaged by frost or accidental damage. It is also more resistant to the suns ultra violet rays. It is slightly harder to bend than PVC therefore making it slightly harder to install. PVC is the choice of most people, especially beginners as its the cheapest but will still last in excess of 10 15 years.

It is more important to line the bottom and sides of the pond more thoroughly with this type of liner. The main problem with PVC is that it will eventually dry and split where it is above the water line and in contact the suns ultra violet rays. By designing a pond correctly you will limit daily access to the sun. One of the best and simplest tips is to limit the amount of liner visible above the water line by simply checking that all sides of the pond are level. If you decide to edge your pond with decorative stones you can position them to overhang the pond slightly to create some well needed shade. Flexible liners are sold by rectangular size. It is important that the liner you buy will be large enough for the size of your pond that you dig. To calculate the sizes for any type of flexible liner simply measure the length, width and proposed depth. Double the depth and add to the length and width. Now add about 30cm to both length and width.

Once you have purchased the correct liner its a good idea to install it on a sunny day. If you unfold the liner and expose it to the sun it will warm it up making it easier to fold and remove any creases when installing. Mark the shape of the pond using pegs and string or a hose and begin to excavate the pond. Depending upon the quality of your soil it is often useful to keep the top soil separate. You can re-use this to put around the pond once it is built. The depth around most of the sides should be about 30cm and made into a shelf. This is ideal size for marginal plants that will be planted in pots. Try to leave at least one side quite shallow. To stop it caving in, make a slight angle and compact the sides with a shovel removing any stones or roots. Next dig deeper to about 60 cm if you plan to keep fish. If you plan to keep many large fish you will have to make this area quit large as the fish will spend a lot of time here during extreme hot and cold spells.

Now that the pond is dug and free from any obstacles the next job is to line it to protect it against rips and cuts. There are some specialist products available but you can use old carpet or any thick material. Then line it again with at least 5cm of soft sand. When installing the liner you can line the sides with sand when you begin to fill with water. Now get your liner and unfold it to find its centre. Place the centre roughly in the middle of your pond. Around the edges place several bricks about 30cm back form the edge. You will now be about to start filling the pond with water.

During the filling of the pond you can walk around the pond lifting the bricks slightly as the weight of the water "pulls" more liner in. You also need to fold any creases in the liner and try to tuck them in neatly. Also during the filling stage you need to ensure that the sides have adequate sand behind the liner. This can be achieved by stopping the water and pushing sand between the liner and the sides of the pond. Once your pond is full of water and you are happy that the level is correct cut the liner about 15cm all the way around. Tuck this under the top soil or under any decorative stones. This completes the construction and now you should leave the water for about a week or add a water treatment typically described as a pond start.
